How Esketamine at Bright Horizons Psychiatry Works

Why Esketamine?

After treatment: Once you’re feeling stable and alert enough, you’ll be discharged to go home with your designated ride. You may feel tired or mentally foggy for the rest of the day, so we recommend taking it easy and avoiding work or driving. Spravato is typically given twice a week in the beginning, with fewer sessions needed over time as you improve.

What is Spravato?

Spravato, generic esketamine, is a prescription fast-acting nasal spray that contains esketamine—a form of ketamine approved specifically to treat certain types of depression. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which can take weeks to work, esketamine often begins to relieve symptoms much faster.

Before treatment:

You’ll meet with one of our providers to see if Spravato is the right option for you. If approved, we’ll help coordinate insurance coverage and set up your treatment schedule. To prepare for each session, don’t eat for 2 hours or drink for 30 minutes beforehand. Since you won’t be able to drive afterward, make sure to arrange a ride home.

During treatment:

You’ll be in a private, comfortable room at our clinic. A trained staff member will guide you through using the nasal spray. Afterward, you’ll relax in the same space while we monitor you for about two hours. Some people feel sleepy, lightheaded, or disconnected—these effects are normal and usually temporary.

What Our Patients Are Saying About Bright Horizons Psychiatry

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Spravato?

Spravato® (esketamine) is a prescription nasal spray approved by the FDA for adults with treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder with suicidal thoughts. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which can take weeks to work, Spravato acts on a different brain pathway and may provide relief more quickly.

Administered in a safe, monitored setting at Bright Horizons Psychiatry, Spravato offers hope for patients who haven’t responded to other treatments—helping to restore balance and improve quality of life when other options have fallen short.

Why might I need Spravato?

If you’ve tried two or more antidepressants without feeling real improvement, you may be dealing with treatment-resistant depression. That’s where Spravato® can help. Spravato is designed for people whose depression hasn’t responded to traditional medications—or for those experiencing intense, overwhelming symptoms, including suicidal thoughts. It works differently in the brain, offering a new path toward relief when other options haven’t worked.

At Bright Horizons Psychiatry, we use Spravato as part of a comprehensive, personalized treatment plan—because you deserve to feel better, and there is hope.

Is Spravato covered by insurance?

Yes! Insurance coverage for Spravato® (esketamine) can vary based on your specific plan and provider. Many major insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid, offer coverage for Spravato, but the extent and terms may differ. Our team is experienced in navigating insurance processes and can assist you in understanding your benefits and obtaining necessary approvals.

What are the potential side effects of Spravato?

Common side effects of Spravato® (esketamine) include dizziness, nausea, sleepiness, headaches, and temporary feelings of dissociation. These effects usually wear off within hours. Spravato is carefully administered and monitored at Bright Horizons Psychiatry to ensure your safety and comfort. Serious side effects are rare but can include increased blood pressure or sedation.

Is Spravato® safe and effective?

Yes, Spravato® (esketamine) is FDA-approved and has been shown to be effective for individuals with treatment-resistant depression. It works quickly, often providing relief when other medications haven’t. While Spravato is generally safe, it is carefully monitored during each treatment session to minimize risks. Its use is closely supervised at Bright Horizons Psychiatry to ensure your safety and optimize its effectiveness.

How does Spravato work?

Spravato® (esketamine) works by targeting a different pathway in the brain compared to traditional antidepressants. It increases the levels of glutamate, a neurotransmitter that helps improve mood and brain function. This can provide faster relief for individuals with treatment-resistant depression.
